Their voice consists of a kind of squeaking cry peculiar to themselves and to no other fowl. It is frequently observed that two leaders are chosen by different gaggles of goslings in which case neither one nor the other ever remains quiet but run at top speed until one of them becomes tired, when she drops back into the second line. The leader also gives notice of this enemy by a loud and shrill cry: ‘Wege’ or ‘Weg’, which is answered by a similar cry from all the others, who immediately seek refuge under her wings. The gaggle keeps up a loud cackling during its flight, which is not more than twenty feet in length but if it intends to alight upon the bank, down goes their leader and all of them into the water.Īt such times when any danger threatens them they seek shelter under her wings until the enemy has passed. This bird places herself at the head of her progeny on land and in water.Īt night she seeks out a dry spot for them to sleep upon, and keeps them warm in her own feathers till morning, should any accident happen whereby their bed might be rendered uncomfortable she feeds them, and it is she to whom they owe the preservation of their lives. Goslings grow very fast and within a few months, their feathers have grown sufficiently to enable them to fly. Baby geese won’t regurgitate food for their parents as other birds do sometimes in order to help feed siblings they have hatched with! Thankfully, adult geese don’t expect this kind of treatment from each other anyway! They have a different system for keeping up with all the little ones born in their nest at once so that no one accidentally gets left behind by accident during feeding time. This speeds up the process of teaching them how to fly and helps them become independent faster than other birds with this ability.ģ. Baby geese are able to fly within 24 hours of their birth! That is amazing because most babies take weeks to be taught how to fly! It is called imprinting and it happens when the young birds learn how to fly from watching an older bird instead of learning from their parents like other birds do. Even if it is a crow or a hawk, the mother goose will keep them to sleep in the same position till she loses her temper or till she senses that danger has gone away.Ģ.
